Blu-ray disc is the latest format for optical discs. When HDTV with resolution up to 6 times the conventional DVD was introduced, the need for a new high definition format of optical disc became necessary.
In order to achieve the new HD format, the Blu-ray Association, headed by major consumer electronics manufacturers, like Sony and Panasonic, developed a 25GB (BD-25) single layer Blu-ray disc and a 50 GB (BD-50) dual layer Blu-ray disc. These discs offer more than 5 times the capacity of a conventional DVD.
In May of 2007, MTSA introduced the first commercially available BD-50 replication line, "Azul". In 2008, MTSA introduced the "Lapis" line to further increase the productivity of Blu-ray production.
Meanwhile, MTSA reached an agreement with Sony for the rights to sell and service Sony mastering equipment in the Americas. Sony's PTR-3000 is used by all major replication companies manufacturing Blu-ray discs.
